MEDICAL TERMINATION OF PREGNANCY
MTOP
At Strathpine GP Superclinic, we provide confidential and compassionate care for patients seeking information about Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTOP), also known as a medical abortion.
We understand this can be a sensitive and deeply personal decision. Our doctors offer respectful, non-judgemental care, clear information, and ongoing support to help you make an informed decision that is right for you.
Termination of pregnancy is legal in Queensland, and you do not need a referral to book an appointment.
What is MTOP?
Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTOP) is a non-surgical option that uses prescribed medication to end an early pregnancy.
In Australia, medical termination is generally available for pregnancies up to 9 weeks (63 days) gestation. Whether MTOP is suitable for you depends on your individual medical history, pregnancy dates, and assessment by your doctor.
The process usually involves at least two appointments:
An initial consultation to discuss your options and determine suitability.
A follow-up appointment one to two weeks later to ensure the treatment has been completed successfully.
What to expect
Your first appointment may include:
A private and confidential consultation with your doctor.
Confirmation of your pregnancy dates.
Discussion of your medical history and current medications.
Referral for an ultrasound and/or blood tests if required.
A detailed explanation of the MTOP process, including potential risks, side effects, and follow-up care.
Discussion of contraception options if you wish.
Referral to another service if MTOP is not the most appropriate option for you.
Your doctor will explain each step of the process, answer your questions, and ensure you have all the information you need before making any decisions. You are welcome to bring a support person to your appointment if you would like.
Is MTOP right for me?
MTOP may be suitable for patients in early pregnancy, however it is not appropriate in every situation.
Your doctor will consider factors including:
How far along the pregnancy is.
Whether the pregnancy is confirmed to be inside the uterus (to exclude an ectopic pregnancy).
Your general health and medical history.
Any medications you are currently taking.
Your access to support and emergency medical care if required.
Any symptoms such as severe pain or heavy bleeding.
If MTOP is not suitable, your doctor will discuss alternative options and arrange an appropriate referral if needed.
Confidential and supportive care
Your privacy is extremely important to us. Our team is committed to providing discreet, respectful, and confidential care throughout your appointment and follow-up.
You do not need to explain your circumstances to our reception team when making a booking. Simply request a Women's Health Appointment or a Pregnancy Options Consultation, and we will arrange an appointment with the appropriate doctor.
If you would like independent support before making an appointment, Children by Choice provides free and confidential counselling for Queenslanders on 1800 177 725. You can also contact 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) at any time for health advice.
